She-wolf Maxima, who together with male Akela formed the first pack in Wallonia, has died. She may have died in a car accident.
She-wolf Maxima was found dead on March 27. The Walloon government service Service Public de Wallonie (SPW) announced this on Thursday.
The services of the Nature and Forest department of the Walloon government service found her in Eupen, near the border with Germany. An analysis of her remains by the University of Liège shows that it was an accident, probably the result of being hit by a vehicle.
At the end of 2020, she-wolf Maxima appeared in Wallonia for the first time. Together with the male Akela, who has been roaming around the High Fens since June 2018, she formed the first pack in Wallonia. Both wolves have a German-Polish pedigree. The two had cubs for the first time in 2021. In the end they had three litters.
