Massive Eruption at Luang Volcano in Indonesia Sparks Tsunami Concerns – Latest Updates

A massive eruption occurred at the Luang Volcano in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, just after 21:00 today, April 17 (Wednesday) Japan time.

According to the Volcanic Airway Vegetation Information Center (VAAC) in Darwin, Australia, observations from the Himawari 9 geological satellite indicate that the plume has reached a height of approximately 19,000 meters.

There are many active volcanoes in Indonesia, which often cause large eruptions.

(Updated) The Japan Meteorological Agency announced a “distant earthquake alert” at 22:00, and said it would monitor the occurrence of a tsunami similar to the one caused by the Tonga volcanic eruption in January 2022.

As of 11:00 p.m., no significant tidal changes have been observed, according to an analysis by the Weather News Geological Center.

(Updated) The Japan Meteorological Agency announced at 4:00 pm on the 18th (Thursday) that there would be no tsunami impact on Japan as a result of this eruption.
