The stock market in Copenhagen in flames – “Notre-Dame again”

The 400-year-old stock exchange building in Copenhagen was ravaged by fire on Tuesday. The fire that started this morning was still not under control at lunchtime. In the afternoon, the after-extinguishing could begin after the firefighters, among other things, fetched water from the port of Copenhagen.

The classic spire that adorned the historic building has collapsed, reports Danish media. At the same time, attempts have been made to save art and other valuable objects from the building.

It is currently unknown what caused the fire, but it is believed to have started near where the construction workers were working.

Renovation work was underway at the building and it was due to be completed by the autumn to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the opening of the stock exchange. The building was historically important, as one of the oldest, and considered by many to be the city’s most beautiful.

“This is like Notre-Dame all over again,” one Copenhagen resident added DR.
