Kazan, Russia. More than 13,000 people were evacuated from the flooded areas of the Russian province of Orenburg, the government of that territory reported this Friday on its Telegram channel.
“13,251 people were evacuated from the flooded homes and family plots, including 3,567 children and 192 disabled people,” the statement said.
It is noted that 1,239 people, including 234 children, are currently accommodated in 43 temporary shelters, where three meals a day are served and all living conditions have been created.
“On the night of April 11 to 12, in the territory of 21 municipalities, 76 towns and 39 rural plot centers, 11,993 residential buildings and 16,543 plots were flooded,” the regional government indicated.
The authorities reported that “in the next 24 hours a greater increase in the water level is expected,” and some 1,500 buildings and more than 1,600 plots of land in 29 towns in five municipalities may be flooded.
On April 5, due to the flooding of the Ural River, a containment dam that protected the Russian city of Orsk, located in the province of Orenburg, burst. As a result, the authorities ordered the evacuation of the old part of the city. Several nearby towns are also flooded.
Two days later, due to the deterioration of the situation both in Orsk and in the entire region, it was decided to declare a state of emergency at the federal level.
Later, due to the risk of new floods, a state of emergency was also declared in the provinces of Kurgan and Tyumen, the latter deciding to do so in advance.
