Welcome home to Gävle and Brynäs IF, Jakob Silfverberg

After the SM gold in 2012, Jakob Silfverberg left the club for the Ottawa Senators. After one season there, the move went to the Anaheim Ducks where it was eleven seasons. During his years in the NHL, he gathered a lot of experience and became a favorite among the supporters. With over 800 games under his belt, it was a mighty turnout we got to witness from Anaheim’s channels this weekend.

– Bringing Jakob home of course feels incredibly good and exciting. Jakob doesn’t really need a further introduction, what he has achieved during his career speaks for itself, everyone knows what qualities he possesses both on and off the ice and with his heart for the club, he is invaluable. It is one of our greats who is heading home and he has really been clear from the start that he wants to come home regardless of league affiliation, we are very grateful for the goodwill Jakob has shown to reach this solution on the spot, says sporting director Johan Alcén.

The last match in the Brynästräyan was the sixth final match against Skellefteå twelve years ago. A match where he stepped forward and scored the decisive goal that led to the club’s 13th SC gold – a classic moment for many Brynäsers.

In that playoff, he was MVP with 20 points in 17 playoff games (13+7). Now twelve years later, the 33-year-old will be able to pull on the Brynäs jersey again.

– The dialogue actually started already last summer, that’s when it became serious that I would come home to Brynäs and play. Since I went over, it has always been there in my mind, but there my and Alcén’s contact grew, so it was actually there somewhere that I made the decision that this would be my last season in the NHL, I am extremely excited about what is to come, says Jakob Silfverberg and continues:

– Series affiliation has not played a major role in my decision. There will be different conditions, but if it were HockeyAllsvenskan, everyone knows what the goal is, if it were SHL, the goal is to start setting out the journey towards a new gold. I’m ticked regardless but of course I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the team, they’ve had a fantastic season and deserve to go up.

Jakob Silfverberg was brought up in the club and played a total of 166 games in the A team before the adventure in the NHL, where he scored 373 points (168+205) in 819 games. He has also represented Tre Kronor in a couple of tournaments. In the last World Cup tournament last year, he was also team captain.

The contract extends over the 25/26 season.

Welcome home, Jakob Silfverberg!
