On April 17, Fire Protection Day is celebrated in Ukraine – a holiday dedicated to an important and dangerous profession. People who risk their lives every day to protect others and property from dangerous elements. This day is not only a tribute to their exploits, but also a reminder of the importance of fire safety and training.
The history of establishing a professional holiday
Fire protection in Ukraine is an integral part of the country’s civil defense system. Its employees work under difficult conditions, sometimes facing extremely difficult situations where every second counts. They perform important functions not only during fires, but also during accidents, man-made or natural emergencies.
In our country, this date has been celebrated for years the holiday changed and transformed. In the period from 1995 to 2004, fire service workers of Ukraine celebrated a professional holiday annually on January 29, in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 7/95 from January 2, 1995. At the same time, since 1998, the professional holiday “Day of the Savior” has been celebrated, which fell on the last Saturday of October. At that time, the holiday was celebrated in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 1170/98. However, since August 27, 2004, the celebration of these holidays was canceled and in the same year, the “Day of Civil Defense Workers” was introduced, which was celebrated on September 17.
Subsequently, in 2008, in accordance with the new Decree No. 830/2008 the holiday was renamed “Day of the Savior”. However, in 2013, taking into account the contribution of fire service personnel in the fight against fire and emergency situations, By Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 555/2013 a new professional holiday was established – “Day of Fire Protection”, which is celebrated annually on April 17.
The history of Fire Protection Day in Ukraine is connected with the long-standing tradition of commemorating firefighters who gave their lives for the sake of others. This holiday is a symbolic act of recognition of the heroic contribution of these people in saving lives and fighting against the elements.
Various events are held on Fire Protection Day: from solemn flower-laying ceremonies to memorials to firefighters and distinguished individuals, to seminars and trainings on fire safety. It is also a time to raise awareness among citizens and carefully follow fire safety rules.
