The Mayor of Sozopol Municipality Tihomir Yanakiev and his wife Polina will run in the longest destination – 15 km. in the first edition of Run Sozopol, which will be held on 20.04.2024, he himself confirmed. So far, about 120 people have applied to participate, including two Republican champions.
“Thank you to the organizers from the Bulgarian Athletics Federation and Run Bulgaria for this event! For sure, Sozopol will perform well and I hope this will become a tradition. Our idea is to attract more people and especially children to sports. We have provided what depends on the Municipality of Sozopol. The only thing that does not depend on us is the weather, but I guess that a spring rain will even make us more ambitious”, said the mayor Tihomir Yanakiev.
He expressed hope that in the future there will be more routes, even for longer destinations, but there must be infrastructure for this. According to Yanakiev, such initiatives help the development of the city.
The event was presented today by Anton Bonov from the Bulgarian Athletics Federation and Run Bulgaria. Three disciplines are included in the run – a run of 15 km. for men and women, 5 km. also for men and women and one destination of 1 km. for beginners and children. The start and finish will be in front of the church “St. Cyril and Methodius” in Sozopol.
The 5-kilometer run is to the Santa Marina complex, and the 15-kilometer run is to the Upside Down House and back. The start is at 10.00.
According to Anton Bonov, the time required to cover 1 km. is less than 5 minutes, 5km in 15-16 minutes and 15km runners will be expected to be back at the finish line by 11.30am.
Mayor Tihomir Yanakiev will run at Run Sozopol side by side with Ismail Sananji – the republican champion of Bulgaria in the half-marathon and marathon. Anton Bonov introduced Senanji, who is from Uganda, married to a Bulgarian woman and has been living in Bulgaria for 10 years. He is a competitor of the club “Ever” Varna and runs long distances with great success.
The competitor stated that he is happy to participate in the sports event and that for him it will be preparation for a marathon – a national championship that will be held in Vrana. Sananji also said that his goal is for more people to exercise and look and keep themselves young. He himself is 37 years old.
The Ugandan will race with number 5 and the mayor of Sozopol with number 1. Long distance runners will have numbers with a chip. All participants in the marathon will receive specially made medals, and the first six finishers will receive prizes from the sponsors.
Shaban Mustafa, who is a mountain running veteran champion, will also take part in the marathon.
The starter packages will be distributed on Friday, 19.04.2024, until 12:00 in the cinema video club of the “Father Paisiy” National Center in Sozopol.
“This will be a celebration for Sozopol,” promised the mayor Tihomir Yanakiev.
