Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist of the website www.ilmeteo.it, confirms the anomalous push of the Azores Anticyclone towards the North-East: over the next few hours the high pressure will expand towards the British Isles, with the maximum centered on Ireland for at least 7 -8 days. With the Azores Anticyclone on holiday in Ireland, there will be no barriers or obstacles against the descent of polar air from Scandinavia towards the Central Mediterranean.
Here, Italy will remain at the mercy of colder unstable currents from the north at least until April 25th, if not later: frequent thunderstorms are expected, especially in the Centre-South, snow in the Alps and Apennines (!) up to 1000 meters of altitude, strong winds and winter-like temperatures.
In detail, the first Scandinavian impulse will cross Italy in the next few hours from the Marche towards the South, after having hit the North: temperatures will drop by up to 12°C on the Adriatic side, falling below the average for the period. After having experienced April-June now we will enter a sort of April-January: the minimum values will drop in the clear areas during the night, while the maximums will continue to drop almost everywhere at least until Saturday. From the point of view of precipitation, we will have the most intense phenomena in the afternoon in Abruzzo, Molise and the southern peninsula, locally also in the Triveneto.
Thursday we will also find snow on the Apennines above 1000 metres: flakes are expected from Tuscany to Molise, although not particularly abundant. It will still be April-January in the Heart of Spring. In addition to the snow in the Apennines, we will still have the white lady in the Alps, scattered thunderstorms and falling temperatures. It will seem to be in a winter-like context from North to South, even if the weather will be better on the Major Islands.
This first disturbed and cold impulse for the period will leave the country Friday 19 April in the evening, moving away towards Greece: the rains will still be the protagonists in the Center-South with phenomena that are at times widespread and persistent. Sardinia will also experience an unstable phase and only in the North will there be large sunny spells in a livelier context, especially in the morning. The maximum temperatures, after having reached 33°C in the North last Sunday, will not even exceed 19°C in the South!
A second Scandinavian impulse will arrive over the weekend: more unstable air will cause thunderstorms especially in the central-southern regions; the Alpine barrier will favor some more clearing in the Po Valley, associated however with greater night-time cooling: there are fears of possible late frosts, harmful to agriculture. Even on the outskirts of Milan we can touch zero degrees!
In summary, we prepare scarves, hats and coats; in the heart of Spring the weather in Italy will be harsh and spiteful: we quickly got used to the summer flavour, but for the beautiful stable and sunny season we will have to wait a long time.
