Santiago: Scientists have discovered more than 100 species of aquatic life in an underwater reef off the coast of Chile, South America.
The species was discovered in the Salas y Gómez Ridge, a mountain range spanning 2,900 km between Chile and Easter Island, 3,530 meters below sea level.
According to the Schmid Ocean Institute, deep sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, amphiboids, squat lobsters and other organisms that have never been seen before have been found in the area.
Researcher Dr. Javier Sallens said that scientists exceeded their expectations in this mission. It is always expected that new species will be discovered in remote, less-seen areas, but the number of life that has been discovered here is surprising.
A team of scientists used a remote-controlled underwater robot to survey the aquatic life of the area and mapped an area of 52,777 square kilometers based on the seabed and hills.
Dr. Javier Sallens added that this thriving and healthy environment indicates that the Nazca-Deshoncherides and Juan Fernandez Marine Parks are effectively protecting the fragile marine ecosystem.
The highest of the four newly discovered seamounts is 3530 meters below sea level and has been observed for the first time.
