Cellular.ID – WhatsApp owner Meta updated its popular chat app with an inbox filter, borrowing a useful feature from email inboxes to help keep track of users’ many conversations during the day.
WhatsApp is said to be one of the most popular chat applications in the world, but especially difficult to use. Meta wants to fix this.
Meta is starting to roll out a new filtering feature on WhatsApp, to make it easier for users to access all types of messages, including all unread messages.
Announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in his official channel on WhatsApp, this feature filters messages into three categories, namely “All”, “Unread”, and also “Groups”.
As the name suggests, the All section will show all the messages on your WhatsApp. Then Unread, it will only show unread messages. Meanwhile, Groups only displays messages from WhatsApp groups.
The update, announced Tuesday, will introduce three filter buttons at the top of the app’s standard chat list. “All”, which is the default, will show all messages, with the other two options being “Unread” and “Group”.
“We believe filters will make it easier for people to stay organized and find their most important conversations and help them navigate messages more efficiently,” the company said in a statement. The free update will be available to all users “in the coming weeks,” the company said.

2 billion users
The move marks another way Meta is changing its popular WhatsApp messaging service to make it more useful. This application, which has more than 2 billion users worldwide, started as an alternative to SMS for many people. Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion.
WhatsApp has slowly added features to its platform over the years, including secure messaging, video chat and the ability for businesses to communicate with customers, among others.
WhatsApp has problems despite its popularity. Meta sued the research firm NSO Group in 2019 after the alleged WhatsApp hack.
Less than a year later, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ phone was hacked through a WhatsApp message.
WhatsApp has been criticized for years for being difficult to use, especially when adding contacts or switching phones.
The company recently overhauled its app, making it look more modern and flexible for people with multiple devices.
Despite the widespread use of WhatsApp, and its stated privacy efforts, Cnet warns against using it instead of other secure messaging apps.
WhatsApp is more convenient, more widely used, and has a better design than competitors like Signal and Telegram.
