Heavy rains hit the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, causing flooding, power outages and road blockages. Dubai has been one of the most affected areas. Overnight, more than 120 millimeters of rain fell on the city’s streets, where that figure is the typical average for a year.
In the videos circulating on social networks, you can see the havoc caused by the historic flood among motorists and pedestrians, as well as at the international airport, where planes have had to ‘navigate’ to be able to move along the runway covered in water.
Even the city’s subway has been affected by the rainfall, causing a temporary suspension of service. The authorities had to implement alternative mobility measures to reduce the inconvenience to users.
On the other hand, a shopping center was also hit by abundant rain, flooding several of its stores.
Rain is unusual in the United Arab Emirates, an arid country on the Arabian Peninsula, but occurs periodically during the colder winter months.
Several roads lack drainage due to lack of regular rainfall, causing water to accumulate.
