Miguel Delgado (29), a father with six children, died and three were injured yesterday when armed men on two scooters opened fire on a corner in the Bronx (NYC).
Two scooters carrying two masked men went down E. Mount Eden Avenue and Townsend Ave. in Mount Eden around 6:15 pm on Tuesday. When they reached the intersection, The four men on board drew weapons and fired around 10 shots.injuring four pedestrians, NYPD Deputy Chief Benjamin Gurley said at a press conference shortly afterward.
Three pedestrians, aged between 23 and 39, were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to their legs. Delgado was too beating to death on the chest.
The suspects wearing hoodies to hide their identities fled north on Townsend Ave. and the Cross Bronx Expressway, explained Daily News.
Delgado’s siblings, parents and grandparents gathered at BronxCare Health System, where he was pronounced dead. “He was a great man,” said his sister Lauren. “It was like no other. He was loved by everyone. He leaves behind six children.”
Police arrested a man for questioning, but it was not immediately clear if she was directly connected to the shooting, Gurley said. Investigators were working to determine the motive for the crime.
The NYPD Community Response Team had been working in the area for the past few weeks. “Aggressively chasing people on scooters,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said at the press conference.
“As a result of this incident, we will be withdrawing our community response teams and they will be specifically targeting people riding illegal scooters, dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles.”“, he added.
The shooting came hours after police announced they had confiscated more than 1,600 illegal mopeds, motorcycles, ATVs and dirt bikes during a massive 10-day operation in the five cities .
Since the beginning of the year, the NYPD has taken 9,500 scooters, dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles off the streets. 989 citations were issued and 1,300 people were arrested as a result of the seizures, Deputy Commissioner Daughtry said
“There is a direct correlation with people riding illegal scooters and committing crimes,” Gurley said.
