The best surfers in the world wait for the big swell in Pichilemu – 2024-04-17 04:23:57

Today the waiting time officially begins until August 15 for the most important big wave championship in South America, whose main purpose is the conservation of Punta de Lobos.

With a ceremony recently held in the Punta de Lobos Park, the International Big Wave “Lobos por Siempre” will seek a perfect swell of waves larger than six meters high. The event will celebrate big wave surfing, supporting the conservation and protection initiatives of Punta de Lobos Park and the coastline in Chile.

In total, there are 32 invited surfers and 15 alternatives, including men and women, who will wait for the biggest and most perfect swell in that location. Among the local competitors who will lead the championship are the current champion Ramón Navarro, Reinaldo “Chacha” Ibarra, Diego Medina, Cristián Merello and representatives of the new generations such as Martín Fuenzalida and Dominique Charrier among other national figures. Among the international stars invited are: Kohl Christensen (Hawaii), Greg Long (California), Gabriel Villarán (Peru), Laura Enever (Australia), Nathan Florence (Hawaii) and other of the best big wave surfers in the world.

NATURE DECIDES

It will be four months of waiting, with autumn and winter being the months with the highest floods and swells in Punta de Lobos, but nature will decide when that day will arrive and surfers will be ready to celebrate big wave surfing.

The competition mode will be similar to the prestigious “Eddie Aikau” event where each competitor has two heats to surf, adding their highest scores. The winner will be the surfer with the best performance of the day, avoiding the concept of “elimination” and maintaining competitiveness.

This modality prioritizes the spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood of surfing, leaves aside everything that is traditional competition and focuses mainly on the search for the best wave of the day, over the strategy of classifying by stages towards a final that decides all.

“Lobos por Siempre is not only a surfing event, it is a unique event in Latin America, of a very high level where you measure yourself against the best in the world, in one of the brightest places in our country and that I know very well being Pichilemino. . The purpose of this event goes beyond sport, since it has a fundamental pillar in conservation and sustainability projects that we are developing in the Punta de Lobos Park and our coasts,” said Ramón Navarro, a prominent Chilean surfer and member of the sports committee of the contest.

Bringing together the best exponents of big wave surfing in the world will be an opportunity to raise awareness in the community about the natural wealth of Punta de Lobos Park.
