Colombia suspends bilateral cabinet with Ecuador due to embassy assault

Bogota. Colombia suspended the bilateral cabinet with Ecuador in response to the assault on the Mexican embassy by the Ecuadorian government of Daniel Noboa, President Gustavo Petro reported this Monday.

“The bilateral cabinet with Ecuador that had been planned with President Lasso has been suspended,” Petro said in his X account.

This binational cabinet was born in 2021 by the former Ecuadorian presidents Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023) and Iván Duque of Colombia (2018-2022).

The main objective of this high-level agreement between both neighboring countries was to address strategic issues such as border cooperation and bilateral trade facilitation.

Petro pointed out that what happened at the Mexican embassy in Quito was “very serious” for the region.

“Reconstructing international law is essential if we want world peace,” he said.

On Friday night, former vice president Jorge Glas was arrested by the police, after taking refuge in the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito due to accusations of corruption in his administration.

This triggered an unprecedented diplomatic crisis in the Latin American region and the Organization of American States (OAS) met to condemn what happened.
