A Samsung regained its position as the world’s largest cell phone seller, surpassing its rival Apple. Manufacturer of iPhone it had taken the first place in 2023 consolidated, displacing Samsung for the first time in ten years, but it has already lost the position again to the South Korean company.
According to the IDC consultancy, in the first quarter of 2024, Samsung sold 60.1 million cell phones worldwide, representing 20.8% of the market share. Apple sold 50.1 million devices for 17.3% of the market. Although both companies saw a drop in sales compared to the first quarter of 2023, Apple’s was much more pronounced: -9.6% for Apple compared to only -0.7%.
In the rest of the top 5, all other companies are Chinese: Xiaomi in third place, with 40.8 million units, Transsion in fourth place, with 28.5 million, and Oppo with 25.2 million, in fifth place.
Despite the decrease in sales from major companies, there was an increase of 7.8% in sales of smartphones worldwide compared to the same period last year, marking the third quarter of growth.
According to IDC, the increase in value and average retail prices was due to consumer preference for more expensive but also longer-lasting models. Along with other data, this would be an indication of the strengthening of the smartphone market.
