Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) has been released from hospital almost two weeks after his heavy crash in the Tour of the Basque Country.
The two-time Tour winner crashed on April 4 together with a number of other riders, including Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, during the fourth stage of the Spanish stage race. The 27-year-old Dane broke his collarbone, several ribs and suffered a lung contusion and a collapsed lung.
Vingegaard gives a short response on the social media of his Dutch team. “Hi everyone, it’s time for me to leave the hospital. I would like to thank the entire medical staff for taking such good care of me. And I want to thank everyone for the moral support. I have received many messages, gifts and drawings. Heart warming! Now it’s time to make a full recovery. Thumbs up!”, he says with some photos of the rider, with an arm brace, posing in front of the hospital.

It remains to be seen what Vingegaard’s injuries mean for his chances of winning the Tour for the third time in a row. La Grande Boucle starts on June 29.
Remco Evenepoel suffered fractures in the right collarbone and the right shoulder blade in the same fall. He had previously been operated on in Herentals. The 24-year-old Evenepoel wanted to prepare himself for the Ardennes classics in the Basque Country, in which he aimed, among other things, for a third consecutive victory in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. ‘De Aerokogel’ from Schepdaal wants to make its debut in the Tour de France this year.
