Defeat Thiem, Djokovic becomes Australian Open champion for 8th time

World number two and Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic defeated Austria’s Dominic Thiem to win his 8th Australian Open and 17th career Grand Slam title.

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Austria’s Dominic Thiem square off in the men’s singles match at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year at Melbourne’s Rode Laver Arena.

In the first set, Djokovic played his best game and defeated Thiem 4-6 to take a one-set lead.

However, after that, Austria’s Dominique Thiem made a brilliant comeback in the match and won two consecutive sets 4-6 and 2-6 to take the lead in the match.

Meanwhile, the Serbian player also complained of an injury due to which he had to seek the help of a trainer.

In the fourth set of the match, Djokovic used his experience to come back in the best way and won the fourth set 3-6 to level the match at 2-2.

Thiem played brilliantly in the deciding set but at that stage he was overwhelmed by Djokovic’s experience and the Serbian star won the set 4-6 after a thrilling contest to claim his eighth Australian Open title.

Djokovic has previously won his first Grand Slam of the year in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.

Along with this victory, Djokovic won his 17th career Grand Slam overall, having also won 5 Wimbledon, 3 US Open and one French Open titles.

Dominic Thiem has lost his third career Grand Slam final, having previously lost to Rafael Nadal at the 2018 and 2019 French Open.
