In areas of the canton of Basel-Stadt that have long been inhabited by tiger mosquitoes, the number of mosquitoes increased significantly last year and caused concern for residents. To better deal with the increase in mosquito density, anti-tiger mosquito measures need to be strengthened. A biological larvicide must be used in tiger mosquito breeding sites that cannot be removed, vacuumed or covered. This agent has a specific effect against mosquito larvae. To make it easier for the residents of the canton to get the product, a total of five collection points will be set up in collaboration with different organizations:
- Werkhof in Riehen, Haselrain 65
- Kleinbasel District Secretariat, Klybeckstrasse 61
- Basel-West District Secretariat, Socinstrasse 2
- Coordination Gundeldinger, Dornacherstrasse 210, 5. OG
- Kantonales Laboratory, Kannenfeldstrasse 2
The opening hours of the drop-off points are listed on the Cantonal Laboratory website (www.kantonslabor.bs.ch/tigermuecke).
Measure at the beginning of the mosquito season
Tiger mosquito eggs survive the winter in breeding grounds and hatch the following spring. Now, as mosquito season begins, the walls of potential breeding sites such as water barrels, spray cans, plant pot saucers or bird baths should be thoroughly cleaned with a brush. In addition, breeding sites must be emptied weekly during the mosquito season from April to the end of October and water barrels must be covered in a mosquito-proof manner.
Continuation of consultation hours for the public
Tiger mosquito consultations will also be held for the public this year. Questions about the use of tiger mosquito treatment as well as general questions about tiger mosquito can be asked here. The open consultation hours now take place every Thursday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. Registration is not required. The venues alternate between the city horticulture center at Münsterplatz (first date: May 16, 2024) and the Cantonal laboratory at Burgfelderplatz (first date: May 23, 2024).
More information about the tiger mosquito and its current status, locations and times of consultation hours, collection points and their opening times as well as information sheets and an explanatory video on avoiding breeding sites can be found. www.kantonslabor.bs.ch/tigermuecke given.
