Popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat has come forward against accusations of mocking Jamaican culture after a video of him dancing went viral on social media.
During his visit to Jamaica, Cenat live-streamed several moments in which he was seen dancing. However, a clip of him participating in the annual Carnival event sparked an avalanche of criticism accusing him of ridiculing Jamaican culture.
On April 9, while live on his Twitch channel, the streamer decided to address the criticism he had received, stating:

“This is when things got weird bro, some had the audacity to say I was making fun of Jamaica. Some guy who’s not from Jamaica goes and makes a tweet… and everyone else under the tweet was agreeing, saying that what I was doing in Jamaica was not culture.”
Caribbean roots
Cenat defended himself emphatically and shared personal details of his connection with the culture:
“This is for people who don’t know me, you’re talking to the son of a mother from Trinidad and Tobago…the Caribbean, okay? My father is Haitian. OK? I grew up eating roti, rice and peas… goat curry, oxtail, jerk chicken, I grew up eating all of that. You understand? “I grew up eating all that.”
Additionally, the streamer made reference to his Jamaican friends and his participation in Jamaican cultural activities during his childhood:
“Then, I had a group of six people at my school who were totally Jamaican…I had friends who grew up strictly in Spanish Town, Kingston, Portmore.”
He continued: ”After school, I would rush to play dominoes, Ludi with my Jamaican friends! “I played Ludi every day after school!”
With these words Cenat tried to explain his admiration for Jamaica, and expressed his excitement at finally visiting the country: “I’ve been waiting to go to Jamaica like this my whole life! Really”.
