The New York judge presiding over former President Trump’s trial said Monday that Trump will not be able to attend arguments on presidential immunity at the Supreme Court next week.
This came after the judge earlier delayed a decision to allow Trump to attend his son Barron’s high school graduation in May.
The efforts by Trump to postpone certain days of his hush money trial that is expected to last weeks, if not months, came as the first day of the trial was officially underway in Manhattan.
The decision not to allow Trump to be in Washington, DC, came on April 25, when the Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on Trump’s presidential immunity claim. in his federal criminal case, just before the New York trial was adjourned on Monday. .
“Arguing before the High Court is a big deal, and I can certainly understand why your client would want to be there, but a High Court case is New York court… , rejecting his request to allow the former president to play hooky.
“I’ll see him here next week,” said the judge.
Under New York state law, Trump must attend his entire trial unless he gets special permission from the judge to skip it.
After the court adjourned for the day, Trump suggested that Merchan thinks it is “better” for the Supreme Court to bar him from attending the high court’s oral arguments .
The former president also accused Merchan of preventing him from attending his son Barron’s high school graduation in May. The judge refused to rule one way or the other on the case earlier on Monday, but he did not completely refuse to allow the former president to attend the event.
“I was looking forward to that step with his mom and dad there,” Trump told reporters. “It looks like the judge is not going to let me get away with this scam.” .It’s a scam test.”
In his comments outside the courtroom, Trump also criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) for attending the trial all day, suggesting that people on his side -outside the courthouse they were “mug and killed all day long”.
The first day of Trump’s first trial was primarily dealing with unresolved legal issues, only turning to jury selection after the afternoon lunch break.
Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with a pre-election frivolous payment made by his former financier, Michael Cohen, to adult film actress Stormy Daniels 2016 to cover litigation. He has pleaded not guilty and denies the charge.
Jury selection is expected to begin Tuesday and last several days or possibly weeks.
