The conduct of fair and free elections is at the heart of the democratic process and therefore effective measures against vote buying and selling as well as corporate voting are needed. The eradication of this vicious phenomenon, inadmissible for a European country, requires systematic and continuous efforts, which the competent authorities in our country are making. This was stated by President Rumen Radev during a meeting with representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), who are part of the international organization’s mission to monitor the upcoming November 14 elections.
The head of state emphasized that the main priority for the vote should be the increase in voter turnout and voter confidence in the transparency and fairness of the election process. “The buying and selling of votes distorts the results of the elections and the will of the voters, therefore measures were taken during the last two votes to prevent these vicious practices,” said Rumen Radev. The president pointed out that the legitimacy and stability of the next parliament and government depend on the fair conduct of the upcoming November 14 vote and on the active participation of voters.
The head of state emphasized that the introduction of machine voting has repeatedly reduced the number of invalid votes. Voters already have experience with the machines, people share their impressions, explanatory campaigns are also being conducted, Rumen Radev pointed out.
During the meeting, measures to guarantee the health of the participants in the electoral process during the campaign and during voting were also discussed.
