Readers’ Club Foundation e Book school present ALIAS. Translation meetings, the first edition of a symposium on translating, on those who translate and those who dream of doing so. In February in Turin, between Thursday 1st and Saturday 3rd at the Readers’ Club, there will be alternating meetings dedicated to the theory and practice of one of the most fascinating professions linked to the world of books.
“Translating is not betraying, it’s the opposite: making languages, words, voices of authors communicate with each other is the very principle of every art, not just literature. Because culture is itself translation, a message that passes between the writer and the reader. Once again, George Steiner enlightens us on the evidence that “understanding” always means “deciphering”, even when communication occurs within the same language. Translating also means having in your hands, in your head and in your heart a beautiful profession which is a daily, intense and exciting comparison, in which every day languages give and give themselves something new” he comments Elena Loewenthal, director of the Readers’ Club Foundation.
“Our readings are often mediated by the invisible work of those who, behind the scenes of a text, have expertly (re)constructed scenography, dialogues, costumes, lights of that fabulous spectacle which is the literary work, which seems to take place under our eyes as if he were born in the language we know. Translations take us to worlds and times that become familiar to us even if conceived with other signs, in other latitudes. ALIAS tells all this; it is a taste of paths that can start here. It is dedicated to those who read the books in translation and wish to investigate that metamorphosis and to those who would like to make that alchemical profession their own”, he declares Marco Cassini of the Book School.
Alias opens at the Readers’ Club with the actress Valentina Lodovini reading Margaret Atwood, opening the doors of this universe to be explored in five lessons held by those who have lent their pen to literary classics of yesterday and today. Beyond the lessons, three translators who have worked on books by Nobel Prize winners sit at a round table to discuss the challenge of dealing with the great masters. Among the translators protagonists of Alias are: Federica Aceto, Maurizia Balmelli, Margherita Carbonaro, Gaja Cenciarelli, Marco Federici Solari, Lorenzo Flabbi, Gine Maneri, Vittoria Martinetto, Fabio Pedone, Anna Ruchat.
