The Šiauliai County Supervision Department of the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) conducted a planned inspection in the food production facilities of the “Jovaro” pro-gymnasium in the city of Šiauliai. During the inspection, violations of food safety, hygiene and general organization of children’s meals were recorded. During the inspection of the premises, food products were also discovered, which were placed suspiciously and in places not intended for them: in containers outside, placed on the ground and on the cupboards in the domestic premises of the employees, etc.
The inspectors also found that on the day of the inspection, April 9, eggs were used in the preparation of dishes, but the specialists noticed that the egg washing dishes were dry and unused. Thus, it was concluded that the eggs were not properly washed, as it should be according to food safety requirements. Knives for cutting vegetables and thermally untreated meat are mixed up and kept in the wrong work areas. It was established that food waste is not handled properly. The floor cleaning inventory is kept with the food production inventory. Dirty, worn-out electrical installation, open, corroded pipelines, damp-damaged walls were also found.
Violations in the organization of children’s meals were also identified – there is no special menu adapted to children who are allergic to milk, fish and nuts, the sugar content of bars used for children’s meals is almost twice as high as allowed.
While inspecting the secondary school, the inspectors found a situation that has already been repeated in other cities: more than 1 kg of cooked rice, 3 kg of boiled pearl barley, cleaned and cut potatoes, which were found lying on the ground outside, possibly prepared for take-out for the personal needs of the employees, at the entrance of the building possibly hidden under cardboard boxes. An unmarked bucket with food waste was placed next to these products. But that’s not all – 2 boxes, 800 g each, of organic hard cheese were found in the employees’ household premises, which should have been distributed to children according to the EU and LR state-sponsored milk and milk product promotion program.
The city municipality was informed about the results of this inspection. According to the decision of the officers of the Supervision Department of VMVT, it is forbidden to supply to the market and the company is obliged to destroy 21 kg of food products. Administrative responsibility will be applied to responsible persons.
