Fugitive arrested in 1991 homicide – 2024-04-15 13:28:54

Miami-Dade County police arrested a man identified as Walter Martínez, 51, who was the last suspect accused of being linked to a terrible homicide that occurred in the city of Hialeah in 1991.

According to the media Local 10 News, Martínez’s arrest took place last Wednesday, April 10, when the subject was at the Miami International Airport.

The county police did not reveal further details of the arrest, so it is unknown if the suspect was passing through to another destination, had just arrived in Florida or was preparing to leave the state.

According to the aforementioned media, the homicide of which he is accused occurred on July 20, 1991, when Martínez, then 18 years old, was with two other young people identified as Elpidio Reyes, 19, and Ulises Kings, 18.

The trio broke into the home of a father named Manuel Palacios, posing as car buyers. Once inside, they tied and gagged the victim, but her son, only 12 years old at the time, witnessed everything.

The minor managed to escape from the house through a window and went out to the street to ask for help, however, by the time the authorities arrived, Palacios had been shot several times, dying shortly after in the hospital.

“Blood inside the victim’s home indicates he was shot inside and then staggered outside. The victim’s house was also ransacked,” reads a report written by Michael Flutie, a detective who took charge of the case in the 90s.

The other two involved were arrested and convicted of having participated in the homicide, however, Martínez managed to evade the police for all these years.

Now, the subject faces a series of serious charges for his participation in the homicide of Palacios, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and use of a firearm to commit a serious crime.

At the moment, Walter Martínez remains detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) in Miami-Dade County.
