The US condemns “use of force” against the Mexican embassy in Ecuador

Washington. The United States condemns “the use of force against embassy officials” of Mexico in Quito after the police raid to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday.

The condemnation came shortly after the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, criticized the position of the United States and Canada in the face of this diplomatic crisis and missed a direct reaction from the US president, Joe Biden.

“We condemn this violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including the use of force against embassy officials,” Sullivan said at a press conference.

It is a much more forceful statement than those of recent days, which López Obrador described as a “bulletin” from the State Department “not condemning the interference, the assault, the invasion of our embassy.”

“We have reviewed the images from the security cameras of the Mexican embassy and we believe that these actions have been a mistake,” Sullivan added.

According to him, “the Ecuadorian government ignored its obligations under international law as a host state to respect the inviolability of diplomatic missions and endangered the foundations of basic diplomatic norms and relations.”

“We have asked Ecuador to work with Mexico to find a solution to this diplomatic dispute,” insisted Sullivan, who welcomed the planned meetings at the Organization of American States (OAS) “to help reach a diplomatic and peaceful solution.” “.

The OAS Permanent Council meets twice this week to address the diplomatic crisis: this Tuesday afternoon at the request of Ecuador and Wednesday morning, at the initiative of Colombia and Bolivia.
