Instagram Implements Tools to Protect Minors from Blackmail with Intimate Images

MONEY REPORT newsletter on environmental, social and governance issues in the business world

Instagram creates tools against blackmail with “nudes

A social network controlled by Meta, Instagram will begin testing a series of tools and alerts in May to prevent young people from falling prey to blackmail with intimate photos. A filter with a blurring function configured for minors’ accounts will be used and will automatically detect nude images received in “direct”. If an account is identified as a source of this criminal behavior, its interactions with young users will be severely limited. If a child or teenager gets in touch, Meta will send an alert and direct them to the “Stop Sextortion” website, which will give access to a telephone line and support associations. The measures will be tested in countries in Central America and Latin America.

Inclusive graduation for afro hair

A time of great celebration, a graduation can be embarrassing for those with afro hair. The traditional mortarboard does not always adapt to curly, frizzy hair, black power hairstyles or braids, forcing graduates to resort to straightening, headbands or even giving up the apparatus. To celebrate diversity and ensure a more inclusive graduation, Vult, a beauty brand from Grupo Boticário, joined the Bahian brand Dendezeiro in the campaign “Respect My Capelo”. The initiative redesigned head coverings to meet the needs of hair diversity.

Discount on jeans in exchange for used items

C&A customers will receive a 10% discount on items from the brand’s new denim collection if they return a used item of clothing at the time of purchase in store. The action is valid and will remain active throughout the month of April. The pieces delivered will be destined for Movimento ReCiclo, the retailer’s circular economy program. Depending on the state of conservation and the material, there are three possible paths: recovery and reuse to make another product – a process known as upcycling –, recycling or donation.

Deforestation in sharp decline in the Amazon

Deforestation in the Amazon fell by 40% in the first three months of 2024, compared to the same period last year, said the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, when launching a program with an investment of R$730 million to promote sustainable development and combat the felling of trees and fires in the biome. Marina highlighted that the drop in deforestation in the first quarter is “highly significant”, as everything indicates that this year’s accumulation will surpass the 50% containment recorded from 2023 to 2022.

It’s easier to produce bioplastic from banana peels

Banana peel is the raw material used by researchers at Embrapa Instrumentação and the Federal University of São Carlos, UFSCar, both in São Paulo, to create bioplastic films with potential application in active food packaging. On Tuesday (8), they announced that through “mild pre-treatments”, which use only water or a diluted acid solution, they have fully converted the product into films with antioxidant properties and protection against ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) and generate waste. Now, the researchers intend to develop the bioplastic film on a pilot scale to make the process even more interesting from an industrial point of view.
