At the age of 80, the great Bulgarian folk singer Stefka Sabotinova died. She will remain forever in the hearts of Bulgarians with the performance of the song “Prituri se montat”, which has traveled around the world, KROSS Information Agency reported.
Her ancestors were immigrants from White Sea Thrace, and from them she inherited a huge and unique singing heritage. For many years she was a chorister and soloist in the “Filip Kutev” State Ensemble. With the ensemble she toured in the biggest concert halls in the world.
In the early seventies, she joined the Folk Song Ensemble of the Bulgarian Television and Radio and the “Mystery of Bulgarian Voices” composition. She was the only singer with solo songs in Marcel Selye’s first album “The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices”. It includes the songs “Prituri se montat” and “Mur, Stanke le”. Even then, “Climb the Mountain” was used as part of the film music in the world productions “Jesus of Montreal” and “The Lions”. Stefka Sabotinova in a duet with Tinka Pesheva also recorded many humorous folk songs, among which “Tsonke le chushko chervena”, “Old, white grandfather cried” and “The widowed fox” are particularly popular.
She gained worldwide fame in 1994 with the song “Prituri se montat”, with the new modern arrangement by Jacqui Anona. Stefka Sabotinova has released two solo CDs and one duet album with the singer Tinka Pesheva.
In June 2010, she was awarded the highest Bulgarian award – the Stara Planina Order – First Class.
