The risk to do diabetes type 2 decreases by 7% for each cup of coffee consumed daily. The conclusion was drawn after an extensive study, in which no less than 1.2 million people participated. It’s not as simple as it sounds, but the research results are promising for coffee lovers.

A new analysis examined a number of scientific studies, based on a total population of about 1.2 million participants, for a better understanding of how coffee consumption affects the development of type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.

The paper ‘Coffee consumption and the reduced risk of type 2 diabetes: a systematic review based on meta-analysis’1, carried out by Prof. Assoc. of studies indicating that drinking coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by approximately 30%.

The analysis revealed that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee contribute to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. This association is dose-dependent: the risk of type 2 diabetes decreases by 7% (caffeinated coffee) and 6% (decaffeinated coffee) ) per cup of coffee per day. However, the reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes appears to be slightly more important for caffeinated coffee.

The cumulative relative risk for type 2 diabetes was 0.71 for the category with the highest coffee consumption (average consumption of 5 cups per day) compared with the category with the lowest consumption (average consumption of 0 cups per day).

The relationship between coffee consumption and type 2 diabetes is of major interest given the increasing incidence of the disease worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is also associated with several adverse complications, which leads to a greater responsibility of the individual, but also of the health system.

The authors reviewed the underlying potential mechanisms that contributed to the effects of coffee consumption on the risk of type 2 diabetes. These potential mechanisms include the antioxidant properties of coffee, given that oxidative stress has been associated with several adverse effects on cardiovascular, metabolic functions and renal. It has been shown that acute and long-term coffee intake can reduce the oxidative stress associated with type 2 diabetes. Also, several studies have shown that regular coffee consumption can reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory markers: low-grade chronic inflammation of has been associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.

The authors of the paper note that long-term, randomized and controlled clinical trials using a placebo to confirm the observed protective association between coffee consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes, as well as to better understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Given that a person’s genotype alters how they metabolize caffeine, interventional studies must stratify participants accordingly.

Although further studies are needed, existing knowledge from epidemiological studies emphasizes the prevention of type 2 diabetes through increased coffee intake.

The authors conclude that, along with other important lifestyle changes to eliminate multiple risk factors, coffee may offer new therapeutic opportunities for type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.
