Israel reported that Iran has targeted their territory approx 100 drones and cruise missiles. Some of them were struck in the airspace over Syria and Jordan, world agencies said, citing Israel’s Channel 12.
“Iran launched drones from its territory in the direction of Israel” said Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari in a live televised address. According to him, the drones it will take them several hours to reach Israeli territory. “The IDF is on high alert and constantly monitors the operational situation,” he said. “The launch of the missiles was undertaken in response to a number of crimes committed by the Zionist regime, including the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus and the killing of a group of our country’s commanders and military advisers in Syria,” the Corps statement added.
Israel has announced that it is closing its airspace for domestic and international flights from 00:30 local (and Bulgarian time)AFP reported.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened Israel’s wartime cabinet in Tel Aviv, his office said, Reuters reported.
Netanyahu also made an extraordinary statement: “In recent years and especially in recent weeks, Israel has been preparing for a direct attack by Iran. Our defense systems are deployed; we are ready for any scenario, both defensive and offensive. The state of Israel is strong. The Israel Defense Forces are strong. The community is strong. We appreciate the US support for Israel, as well as the support of Great Britain, France and many other countries. We have defined a clear principle: whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and we will do so with a firm head and determination. Citizens of Israel, I know you are balanced too. I urge you to follow the instructions of the Israel Defense Forces Command. Together we will resist and with God’s help together we will defeat all our enemies”.
Jordanian air defense is ready to intercept and shoot down Iranian drones or other aircraft that violate its airspace, two regional security sources were quoted by Reuters as saying.
The sources said the army is also on high alert and radar systems are monitoring drone activity.
State media reported that Jordan had declared a state of emergency amid the threat of an Iranian attack on Israel.
Lebanonwhich, like Jordan, borders Israel, announced it was closing its airspace after the Iranian attack, AFP reported.
US President Joe Biden receives timely information from his national security team and is in constant contact with Israeli officials as well as US partners and allies, National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.
In recent days increased warnings that an Iranian attack was possible, after Tehran repeatedly threatened to retaliate against an alleged Israeli attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria that killed two brigadier generals.
