On Wednesday around 6 p.m., 39-year-old Mikael, who has a Polish-sounding surname, was riding a bicycle with his 12-year-old son. They were on their way to a swimming pool in the Skärholmen district of Stockholm.

As they passed through an underground pedestrian crossing, one of the group of teenagers there shouted something to him. The man got off his bike, turned his attention to them, and then during this exchange, a shot was fired. The 39-year-old was shot in the head and died in front of a 12-year-old child. The attackers fled, and the son called 911 and his grandmother.

This incredible crime shocked Swedish society. Flowers and candles appeared at the site of the murder, and politicians also visited it, including: Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson.

The police initiated an investigation, but – as Anna Westberg from the Stockholm police emphasizes – no one has been arrested in this case, even though two days have passed.

We are reviewing recordings from surveillance cameras, checking leads and interviewing people who may have knowledge about the circumstances of the incident, said the spokeswoman for the police in the Swedish capital. She did not want to reveal who exactly was being questioned. We have more information about the incident than we can disclose, added Anna Westberg in a conversation with the media.

On Wednesday, the Swedish Parliament adopted a law introducing the so-called security zones, i.e. the possibility for the police to conduct searches and searches of people and property in a given area without specific suspicion. The new regulations are scheduled to enter into force at the end of April.
