Meta introduces new features on Instagram to protect users from blackmail through intimate photos

Meta has announced that it is introducing new features in its social network Instagram, the purpose of which is to protect its users, especially young people, from blackmail through intimate photos, DPA reported.

Meta has confirmed that it has begun testing a digital “filter for photos with intimate content” on Instagram. It is built into the Direct Messages personalized messaging platform known as Direct Messages (DMs).

The digital filter will be permanently active on the profiles of users who are under the age of 18. It will automatically blur photos sent to them that the system “determines” to be of an intimate nature. This will provide greater protection for users who do not wish to receive such photos, Meta states.

However, if they receive them, the system will send them a message that they are not required to “open” them or respond to the sender.. They will be able to block him from contacting them again via Direct Messages and will have the option to report him to the administrators of the social network.

In turn, those who send photos of an intimate nature will receive messages to be careful, as they are spreading inappropriate and potentially harmful content. They will be given the option to block the offending photos from being sent. However, this will only happen if they have turned on the digital “filter for photos with intimate content”.

In addition to Instagram, Meta also owns the social networks Facebook and Threads.
