The United States is the largest Bitcoin whale among governments and, at the time of writing, holds 212,847 BTC worth ~$14.9 billion. Since the beginning of 2023, the US government has added at least 5,000 BTC to its wallets.

In addition, the country has reserves of ETH, USDC, USDT, DAI and other assets totaling about $200 million.

The UK ranks second with a balance of 61,245 BTC worth $4.5 billion. Germany is third with 49,858 BTC worth $3.5 billion.

El Salvador, where Bitcoin has been legal tender since 2021, lags far behind other jurisdictions. Only 5,717 BTC worth $405 million are stored in government wallets.

In March, the country’s President Nayib Bukele revealed the address of the government’s first cryptocurrency. Prior to this, the head of state estimated the unrealized profit from investments in digital gold at 40% or $41.6 million.

Let us recall that in January the US government notified of the planned sale of 2875 BTC confiscated from drug dealers of the Silk Road darknet marketplace, Ryan Faras and Sean Bridges.

In early April, a US government-controlled wallet initiated a transfer of ~2,000 BTC to an address on the Coinbase Prime platform.
