New Bills Approved for Paramedic Protection in New York City – Get the Details Here!

In order to offer protection to the women and men who protect citizens on a daily basis through urgent medical services, the Municipal Council approved two new bills on the subject this Thursday.

Joseph Borelli, leader of the Republican minority in the municipal entity, is the one who led the legislation that seeks for the Fire Department to provide body protection to paramedics. This would include bulletproof and sharp-resistant vests in accordance with National Institute of Justice standards.

Borelli said this through social networks:

“I have been pushing for these bills for several years and I am pleased that I finally got them passed. “EMTs are not second-rate first responders and deserve the best equipment and training we can afford them.”

According to official figures, paramedics and EMS or emergency medical services personnel in New York were attacked on 363 occasions in 2022 alone, an increase of more than 2,000% compared to figures from 2011 when Only 15 attacks on staff were recorded.

A widely reported case was that of paramedic Yadira Arroyo, who was run over by her own ambulance in the Bronx in 2017, causing her death.

The other bill that was approved seeks for the Fire Department to also offer conflict resolution and self-defense training to paramedics.

For her part, the commissioner of the Department spoke to us about the importance of having this new support:

“They often work between firefighters and police, and people can confuse what type of first responder they are,” said Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. :

“Time is of the essence for them and they want to make sure they can tell everyone they are there to help. The vest gives them extra protection when they are in dangerous situations and the training makes sure they can talk to anyone.” person on scene and make sure they can get directly to the patient, so we’re very happy to see this,” the commissioner added.

Some New Yorkers said they favor such protections.

“These are people who are exposed to the different moments that one has to react at that moment and do not know who they are dealing with,” said Ivonne Pavón.

And according to the union Local 2507, which covers paramedics, during fiscal year 2023 emergency medical personnel responded to more than 30,000 cases considered life-or-death emergencies and the demand for services does not make but go up.

What is needed now is for Mayor Adams to sign this legislation into law.
