NNA – The United Nations said on Friday that it expects the humanitarian crisis resulting from the war in Sudan to worsen significantly in the coming months and may push some areas into famine, according to Agence France-Presse.
The state of emergency may also extend to neighboring African countries unless the fighting stops, according to what United Nations agencies have made clear, with the one-year anniversary of the start of the war in Sudan (April 15).
“Time is running out,” WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said.
He told reporters in Geneva, “If the fighting does not stop and if humanitarian aid does not enter without obstacles, the Sudan crisis will worsen significantly in the coming months and may affect the entire region” in terms of the influx of an increasing number of refugees, the spread of diseases and food insecurity.
He continued, “We only see a small part of the problem, and the situation may actually be more serious.”
