Jaime Guevara: “We do not need new debt but rather a tax reform” – 2024-04-12 05:42:45

Jaime Guevara, deputy of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), considered that the Government’s announcement to buy back the public debt is a product of the lack of State policies to alleviate the economic crisis that El Salvador is experiencing.

“The issue of buying back the public debt is because there is an economic crisis in this country and we must pay the commitments we have,” the legislator told the press.

In addition, Guevara indicated that the government needs to pay the external debt and since there are no clear public policies, it must resort to acquiring more debt.

Even in the last plenary session of the Legislative Assembly, a new debt ratification was approved, for an amount of $480 million dollars, money that the population must pay through their taxes.

“Why not take a tax reform that forces those who have more to pay more? Why should the people pay and not the big businessmen who earn millions of dollars in the country?” questioned the FMLN deputy.

For Guevara, the Legislative Assembly must propose a responsible tax reform that relieves the most impoverished population of taxes and forces those who have more to pay more.
