(CNN) O.J. Simpson, a former NFL star who was indicted and acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife, died of cancer on the 10th. He was 76 years old.

Simpson’s family made the announcement on the 11th on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said in a statement that Simpson had prostate cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy.

Simpson was charged with murder in the 1994 murders of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles, California, but was acquitted the following year.

As a former star athlete, Simpson’s criminal trial attracted national attention and was watched by many people. The case also attracted attention for its racial bias, as the defense team for Ms. Simpson, who is black, argued that the detective who led the investigation had racial bias.

The most famous part of the trial is the scene in which, at the request of prosecutors, Simpson wore gloves, one found at the murder scene and one at Simpson’s home, in front of the jury. The gloves were said to have been small for Simpson’s hands and he had difficulty putting them on, giving him an advantage.

Simpson was later arrested and convicted of a robbery in Las Vegas in 2007. He served about nine years in prison and was released in 2017.

As a football player, Simpson scored a total of 76 touchdowns and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985.
