A recent study from the US showed that a ketogenic diet not only helps restore metabolic health, but also alleviates mental illness.
Stanford Medicine researchers, who conducted the study, say the results are promising because they offer an alternative approach to managing mental disorders.
During the research, adult subjects diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, who were taking antipsychotic medication and experiencing metabolic problems, were put on a ketogenic diet, which consisted of 10% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 60% fat, not counting the calories.
Study participants had their blood ketone levels measured weekly, with monitoring showing they were sticking to the regimen.
Before the study, almost a third of the participants had metabolic syndrome, characterized by various abnormal health indicators. After four weeks of the ketogenic diet, none of the participants showed signs of this syndrome.
On average, participants lost 10 percent of their body weight, reduced their waist circumference, improved blood pressure, lowered triglycerides and improved insulin sensitivity, according to a report published by Psychiatry Research and cited by EurekAlert.
Psychiatrically, subjects showed a 31% improvement on a clinical rating scale, with 75% of them making significant progress.
