The European Union (EU) is forming a new military structure, the European Legion, for the defense of the countries of the association. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced this in an interview with the Greek publication Ekathimerini.
“We are in the process of developing a European military capability called a rapid deployment capability. I call it “European Legion” – said head of the Polish Foreign Ministry.
He noted that we are not talking about creating an “EU army”, because the merger of the armies of different countries is unlikely to ever happen.
However, the formation of a new structure is necessary because, according to Sikorsky, the United States is competing with China, and Russian President Vladimir Putin “has called himself our enemy.” The EU must therefore shoulder “a large share of the burden,” Poland’s foreign minister said.
“European defense is an idea whose time has come,” he emphasized. And he added that Poland does not want wars, but we still need to be prepared for them.
Sikorsky did not disclose detailed details about the European Legion.
Earlier, Telegraf.news wrote about the proposal by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to create a unified army in the European Union. “If we want to be peacemakers in the world, we need a European army,” Reuters quoted Tajani as saying.
