Veteran football player Nikos Georgeas was sentenced to six months in prison for making a false statement regarding the 2013 Olympiakos game with Veria, which had ended 3-0 in favor of the home team. The former defender of AEK and Veria was found guilty by a decision of the Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Athens as the court ruled that no Olympiakos player confirmed to the defendant the manipulation of the match!
Georgeas, who was sentenced to six months in prison for perjury, had said, among other things, in his testimony at the “Gang” trial that he had testified as a witness: “We were getting ready to leave the locker room and Lanaris comes in and tells us, “I am in the unpleasant position of telling you that we have to lose 3-0. I told him “No way”. We were all inside the locker room. I went out by myself and then the others also went out. When Lanaris entered, Kalaitzidis had left. We entered the pitch late. I asked for and became a change, I was the first change that happened. We asked to be told from the beginning, not to come, not to play. I believe this was all done for betting reasons. It is impossible to get an accurate score in a 3-0 match without both sides being caught… Some have contributed…
Chairman: Have you been asked to have reduced performance?
Farmer: Yes, yes.
Chairman: Has anyone experienced reduced performance?
Farmer: I don’t want to blame someone, don’t take someone down my throat. First time in my life, this is happening to me. I do not like it at all. I asked the coach to take me out so I wouldn’t get a red card.
Prosecutor: When you sat on the bench, did you watch the game with concentration?
Farmer: No
Prosecutor: Why didn’t you watch him after all this had happened at halftime?
Farmer: That’s why I didn’t follow him. I only watched the goals.
Prosecutor: Describe the phases to me
Farmer: I don’t remember them. One was a penalty, the other was a cross, a header and a goal was scored. Why are you pressuring me?
Prosecutor: Did you know your teammates would be sitting down to lose?
Farmer: No. We were told that anyone who doesn’t want to can get out. Why did they stay?
Prosecutor: After the fight did you have any discussion about it?
Farmer: In training after the match, yes. “If only they told us, not to come down to play.” Such were said, as also “to be calmer.” As soon as I saw him (Lanaris), I thought he would offer us some extra premium.
Prosecutor: Did you react to Lanaris?
Farmer: I said to him “who doesn’t want to?” and he told me “whoever doesn’t want to, get out of the game”.
Prosecutor: You said you think this was all done for betting reasons. Did you investigate it?
Farmer: No.
Nikos Georgeas had also said: “Usually the coach would talk to us and go out to the field. Kalaitzidis came out and after 1-2 minutes Lanaris entered the locker room. All he said was “anyone who doesn’t want to come out”. Kalaitzidis told me “play”, I told him “if I play I will eat red, I will not sit and eat three goals”.
