Queen Maxima’s three daughters are said to have made it clear to their mother several times that their pocket money did not meet the guidelines of the National Institute for Budget Information (NIBUD) and that they therefore deserve an increase. Maxima said this during the anniversary of the budget officer.

NIBUD has a table on its website that indicates how much pocket money parents should give their children. It is only a guideline and therefore not an obligation, but the three princesses would regularly quote the table as an argument for an increase in their pocket money. “My children closely followed the tables on NIBUD Jong, in which you can see which pocket money level suits which age. And more than once they alerted me that they deserved a raise. Also for this: thank you NIBUD,” she said at the celebration of the 45th anniversary.
In an interview about the financial independence of women to Libelle Nederland, Maxima said earlier this week how important she finds giving pocket money. “Financial education works best if it is tailored to the situations you are faced with at that moment. Giving pocket money at a young age is a good start. We have also done that with our daughters, under the guise of pocket money is education money,” said the queen. And if the princesses had spent their money unwisely, they had to suffer the consequences themselves.

The three daughters are now between 17 and 20 years old and can also work for a living. For example, Amalia (20) sometimes works behind the bar of a beach bar and Princess Alexia (18) indicated last year that she would not only travel but also work during her gap year.
But Maxima said in that interview that they also turn a blind eye every now and then. Because if they really want something, the King and Queen of the Netherlands – like many parents – sometimes dare to help. “However, the basic principle is that they cannot spend more money than their budget. We also teach them the importance of saving and a financial buffer,” says the mother of three.
