French Fitness and Bodybuilding Final in Martigues: Selecting Athletes for European Championship

Venice of Provence will host an unusual event this Friday and Saturday: the French fitness and bodybuilding final, at La Halle. A competition whose winning athletes will be selected for the European Championship, from May 1 to 6 in Santa Susanna, Spain.

Philippe Hechler, who anyone who has attended a gym in Martigues necessarily knows, is the coach of the France team. It is he who will select, at the end of the selections, the athletes who will leave for Spain for the Diamond Cup.

190 national federations

Philippe Hechler has been accustomed, for decades, to the codes of this discipline which he practiced first as a competitor and, for five or six years, as a coach.

This weekend’s competition is organized by the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) under the leadership of the French association (AFBB). The IFBB has more than 190 national federations and organizes, each year, more than 2,500 competitions at local, regional, national, continental levels, as well as world championships.

This may be impressive, but the more than 350 athletes expected in Martigues will be divided into 96 categories, determined, firstly, by age. For men, juniors up to 23 years old; seniors from 23 to 40 years old then masters from 40 years old. For women, same age groups but masters start at 35.

Then the body specificities strictly speaking: fitness then bikini (toned physique without muscular hypertrophy), wellness (a little more muscular), bodyfitness and women’s physique for women and men’s physique (an athletic physique but not bodybuilder) and men’s bodybuilding for men, the latter being considered the premier category.

Some categories require a weight-height proration. This is why tomorrow’s day is dedicated to weighing and measuring: all competitors will have to present themselves. It starts at 3 p.m. The serious things will begin the next day at 9:30 a.m.

Friday April 12 from 3 p.m., weigh-in and measuring, free entry. Saturday April 13 competition from 9:30 a.m. Entrance: 30 . Catering possible on site.
