In the dispute over an artificial lake that was illegally created on his luxury property near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s soccer star Neymar does not have to pay a million-dollar fine for the time being. This decision by a judge emerges from court documents that were available to the AFP news agency on Wednesday (local time). The judge suspended the sentence, citing a report from the state environmental agency that said no special environmental permit was required for the lake project.

Neymar had previously been fined more than 16 million reals (almost 3.1 million euros) by the city’s environmental authority. The football star took action against this. The judge ruled that the amount of the fine would cause the 32-year-old “significant, disproportionate and even illegal damage” and suspended the payment of the fine.

Neymar bought the property in 2016. The property is reportedly over 10,000 square meters and includes a helipad, spa and gym.

Construction workers also created an artificial lake and beach without permission from the authorities. For this purpose, among other things, a river was diverted. When the authorities cordoned off the property and ordered all construction work on the property to stop immediately, the footballer ignored the instructions: According to Brazilian media reports, he instead threw a party and went swimming in his artificial lake.
