A large batch of cocaine weighing more than five tons was seized from a warehouse on an industrial estate in Wilrijk on Wednesday after a raid by special units. The police were able to arrest twelve suspects and numerous weapons were seized.

The raid happened on Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 PM in a business complex with several warehouses in Terbekehofdreef in Wilrijk. Detectives from the Federal Judicial Police (FGP) Antwerp had information that a large load of cocaine would be unloaded there. “In collaboration with the special units of the federal police, the FGP raided the warehouse,” the public prosecutor’s office confirms. The gate of one of the warehouses was sawed open and the heavily armed police officers were able to arrest eleven people inside.

“In the warehouse, the police found dozens of packages of cocaine and various weapons. The amount of cocaine is estimated at 5 to 6 tons,” confirms Kristof Aerts, spokesperson for the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “A twelfth man was later arrested.” The large shipment of drugs was taken by customs and is being destroyed.

The public prosecutor’s office has requested the investigating judge. The twelve suspects between the ages of 24 and 60 with Belgian, Dutch and Guinean nationality will be brought before the investigating judge on Thursday.
