In December last year, Slovenian national grid operator Eles and Serbia’s Elektromreża Srbije established the regional electricity exchange Adexin cooperation with the Paris-based organizer of electricity markets in 13 countries, Epex Spot – reminds the Slovenian agency STA.
Adex, which is joined by the Hungarian energy exchange HUPX founded in 2010, was the first regional energy exchange in Central and Southeastern Europe.
Hungary is still dependent on imports of Russian energy resources. On Tuesday, Szijjarto stressed the importance of expanding the Paks nuclear power plant in central Hungary for the country’s security.
This is one of the key energy projects of Viktor Orban’s government. At the beginning of 2014, the construction of two new units with a capacity of 1,200 MW each was entrusted to the Russian state corporation Rosatom. The entire investment is expected to amount to approximately EUR 12 billion, of which 80 percent the costs will be covered by a Russian loan.
Energy integration of the Balkans with the EU
The joint energy exchange of Hungary, Slovenia and Serbia is scheduled to start operating in the second half of the year. Szijjarto emphasized that the project covers not only European Union countries, but also Serbia, which remains outside the Community, which contributes to the energy integration of the Western Balkans with the EU.
