Manchester. A goal from Mohamed Salah in the 84th minute saved Liverpool from a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, a result that left Arsenal at the top of the Premier League due to having a better goal difference.
Liverpool looked set to suffer their first defeat in the English league since February after goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put United ahead at Old Trafford. Attacker Luis Díaz gave a dominant Liverpool the lead in the first half, but Jurgen Klopp’s team saved the day 10 minutes from time when Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought down substitute Harvey Elliott in the area.
With boos echoing throughout the stadium, Salah finished with aplomb, making rival goalkeeper Andre Onana dive to the other side. Arsenal and Liverpool have 71 points, with reigning champions Manchester City one unit behind in third place.
During a long passage of the Northeast of England classic, the Merseyside club seemed set to remain the sole leader, thanks to a great display in a first half in which they had 15 shots on goal against none from the local team.
The only surprising thing was that Liverpool was unable to take advantage of an uneven process and went into half-time with a slim one-goal lead.
That goal fell after a corner kick in the 23rd minute that revealed a weak United defense. The Uruguayan Darwin Núñez headed the ball towards an unmarked Díaz at the far post, and the Colombian scored with a volley.
After resisting Liverpool’s bombardment, the hosts equalized at 50 with a remarkable shot from Fernandes when he took advantage of Jarell Quansah’s gift. The Liverpool defender dominated the ball from his half of the field and wanted to give it back short, but Fernandes intercepted the ball and scored first from almost the central circle, catching goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of him.

Liverpool rescued the point when Wan-Bissaka fouled Elliott. Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the penalty spot and Salah took care of the rest.
