French Foreign Minister Stephane Ségornet said on Wednesday that there were no current plans to impose sanctions on Israel to force it to allow more humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza, softening strong statements he made this week.
Sigourney added to deputies in the National Assembly (Parliament): “There are no plans at this stage to impose general sanctions on Israel.”
He stated that France recently imposed sanctions on some settlers who it says are engaging in violence in the occupied West Bank and that it “will continue to do so.”
The French minister’s statements came after he said in an interview the day before that sanctions might be an option to put pressure on the Israeli government, which sparked welcome and angry reactions from public opinion divided in France due to the Gaza war. France is home to large numbers of Muslim and Jewish minorities.
“There must be means of pressure, and there are multiple means, including sanctions, to allow humanitarian aid to pass through checkpoints,” Sigournet said in an interview with RFI radio and France 24 television.
