Mexico City. Marco Verde’s path to Paris 2024 looks promising, after having defeated boxer Roniel Iglesias, Olympic champion in London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.
The Mexican, who qualified for the Olympic Games last year, faced the Cuban in a very different modality from the Olympic one. The battle was agreed in a professional format and eight rounds.
Despite the change, Verde knocked out his rival in five rounds in a function that was organized by the IBA (International Boxing Association) within the framework of the San Marcos Fair in Aguascalientes.
One day after the resounding victory he achieved in the 71 kilograms, the monarch in the Central American and Pan American Games expressed his impressions.
“He was a very tough rival, with a lot of fangs, he will serve me a lot for future competitions. Having beaten a double Olympic champion is going to give me a lot of confidence,” said the 21-year-old boxer.
Regarding the format he commented:
“Professional competitions are very different from amateur ones, but still that confidence of knowing that I can, that I am at the level of the greats, gives me a lot of satisfaction and self-confidence.” said the Mazatlan.
Marco Verde will emulate the steps of his father Manuel, who in Barcelona 1992 was part of the Mexican boxing delegation that competed in that Olympic event.
