The Foreign Minister of Mexico, Alicia Bárcena, asked this April 9 to the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to accompany the complaint that her Government will make before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the assault on the embassy. in Quito.

Bárcena added that the events that occurred at the Mexican embassy in Quito “must be condemned internationally to safeguard the laws that govern the countries.”
“There is no room for hesitation (…) The behavior of the Government of Ecuador was disproportionate and cannot set any precedent,” he stated.
The CELAC foreign ministers are meeting virtually this Tuesday to seek a way out of the diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador, unleashed after the assault on the North American country’s embassy in Quito by the Ecuadorian security forces.
On April 5, an elite team of Ecuadorian police armed and forcibly entered the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito to arrest the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, who had requested political asylum there and was waiting for safe passage to travel. to Mexican territory.
The former vice president, who had a six-year prison sentence for alleged irregular financing of the Alianza País party and is also accused of alleged embezzlement of funds during the reconstruction process of the coastal province of Manabí after the 2016 earthquake, claimed to be victim of “political persecution.”
