Pioneering Physicist Peter Higgs, Nobel Prize Winner and ‘God Particle’ Proposer, Passes Away at 94 in Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Gatra.com – Peter Higgs, Nobel prize winning physicist who proposed a new particle known as Higgs Bosondied at his home in Edinburgh, Scotland on Monday (8/4) local time.

Higgs, 94, was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 2013 for his work in 1964. His research shows how boson helps bind the universe together by giving mass to particles. Basically, Higgs Boson can explain why all particles have mass. Without Higgs Boson, we will have no mass. All of them will have no mass. That’s why most scientists say Higgs Boson as the ‘God Particle’.

After a series of experiments that began in earnest in 2008, the theory was proven by physicists working at the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland in 2012. The Nobel Prize was also shared with François Englert, a Belgian theoretical physicist whose work in 1964 contributed directly to the discovery. .

A Fellow of the Royal Society and Companion of Honor, Higgs spent much of his professional life at the University of Edinburgh, which founded the “Higgs Center for Theoretical Physics” in his honor in 2012. Higgs was also a professor emeritus at the prestigious university.

“Peter Higgs is an extraordinary individual. He was a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination have enriched our knowledge of the world around us. “His pioneering work has motivated thousands of scientists, and his legacy will continue to inspire many more generations to come,” wrote the University of Edinburgh’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Peter Mathieson in his official statement.
