Of the almost 700 people who died in Dutch traffic last year, more than 39 percent were cyclists. Twenty years ago, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics, this was still 20 percent; Until 2019, the share fluctuated between 30 and 33 percent.
Last year, 270 cyclists died in traffic in the Netherlands. In two out of three victims, the cause was a collision, often with a car. For 84 cyclists, it was not a collision that was fatal: for example, they accidentally fell off a bicycle.

After 2019, the share of cycling fatalities in traffic has risen sharply. Since 2020, the number of cyclists killed has also exceeded the number of motorists killed every year. That difference continues to increase.
Of all cycling victims in 2023, 43 percent rode an electric bicycle. In 2019 that was still 32 percent.
According to Statistics Netherlands, the total number of road deaths (684 last year) has been showing a fairly stable trend for many years, despite the government’s objective to significantly reduce it. In the corona years, when there were fewer people on the road, there was a drop to around 600 per year.
